Google Chrome OS

Chrome OS is set to have a publicly available stable release in the second half of 2010.

Speed, simplicity, and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. It was designed to be light weight and fast, to start up and get the users onto the web in a few seconds. Chrome OS was created for people who spend most of their time on the web.

Chrome OS will run on x86-based PCs, as well as the machine built around the ARM processor and will be able to run practically on any PC that meets the minimum requirement, ranging from netbooks on the low end to high end power desktops.

Google began coding the operating system in 2009, inspired by the growing popularity and lower power consumption netbooks. Most netbooks users focus on internet access, not heavily function like working on graphic design or gaming. In March 2010, Google indicated that they will create two versions of Chrome: consumer version and enterprise version.

Martin Bligh, Google software engineer, mentioned on the video posted on Youtube that Chrome OS takes 4 seconds to boot up and be ready to log in to gmail.

Design goal and direction of Chrome OS is to make accessing to the internet work or webpage as fast as possible. So the OS combine all basic webpage application into one tab strip, rather than split them. Because Chrome OS is initially intended for secondary devices like netbooks, not a user’s primary PC, when Chrome OS is booting, it doesn’t need to search or probe for hardware that mostly don’t be used on netbooks. This makes booting period takes shorter time.

Chrome OS requires the lower capacity of memory storage than the traditional operating system like Window or MAC, so Google has requested that its hardware partners solid state devices because of their higher performance and reliability. Further, using internet means Chrome OS users access to the data from remote servers which means Chrome OS don’t need large capacity of storage device. It consumes only one-sixtieth as much drive space as Window 7.

Chrome OS will be able to play back MP3s and view JPEGs, and handle other multimedia files while offline.

Google is planning to create Google Cloud Print, which will allow users to print from any brand of printers or any device without installment of require drivers for each specific device or printer. It means just use Google Cloud Print for all printers. It saves more space.
